Alhambra
Alhambra is a historic and peaceful city located in the western San Gabriel Valley region of Los Angeles County. The city is located in Southern California, and has the ZIP codes of 91801 and 91803. It is approximately eight miles from the Downtown Los Angeles civic center. At its last estimate during the 2010 census the population was 83,103 down from 85,672 in the 2000 census. Alhambra was named after Tales of the Alhambra, a book by Washington Irving, and not after the Alhambra palace itself. The city was founded at first as a suburb of Los Angeles in 1903. Alhambra had previously existed as an unincorporated area during the middle of the nineteenth century. In 1898, five years before the city's incorporation, the city’s high school, Alhambra High School, was established. The Alhambra Fire Department was later established in 1906. Finally, on July 11, 1903, Alhambra was incorporated as a city. Alhambra is a city of well-manicured, charming residential neighborhoods and abounds with new businesses. It is located within a "Sixty Mile Circle" based around Los Angeles. The region is a dynamic concentration of business, population, finance, employment and industry. Two-thirds of the California’s largest 100 corporations are headquartered within this circle. Transportation, medical and educational, medical programs also abound in Alhambra. The city contains some of the region's best retail centers, which draw sales from the nearby auto dealer-ships and shopping districts. The renaissance of business and development in Downtown Main Street has been a top priority recently. Because of these efforts, there are now many attractive destinations to shop, dine and be entertained locally in Alhambra.
